The first appearance of Muslims in Germany dates from the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century, in the framework of diplomatic relations. Besides, twenty soldiers of the Muslim faith served King Frederick William I of Prussia, his successor Frederick II founded a unit in the Prussian army called "Muslim Riders," mostly Bosnians, Albanians and Tatars.

In 1900, Germany had about 10,000 Muslims, particularly Slavs and European Turks.

Around 1914, during the First World War, 15,000 Muslims were prisoners of war in Berlin. After the war a small number of Muslims (3,000) remained in Germany, of whom 300 were of German origin.

At the end of the Second World War, only a hundred Muslims remained in the country.

In 1960, a large wave of Muslim immigration took place, among the immigrants one lists about 750,000 Turks.

In 2009, the Federal Office for Migration estimated Muslims that are living in Germany to 4.7 million, which is worth 5.7% of the population. However, only 1.9 million have German citizenship.

According to "Spiegel" magazine, between July 2004 and June 2005, nearly 4,000 citizens have converted to Islam, four times more than the year before.
