Being a Catholic nation, Luxembourg hosted immigrants from Portugal and Italy only, who were, of course, Catholics.

In 1970, there were about 300 Muslims in Luxembourg.

During the 1990s, a wave of immigration of Muslims from the former Yugoslavia, both asylum-seekers and those seeking employment, landed on Luxembourg soil. As a result, the Muslim population has grown considerably, thus the number of Muslims rose from 300 to more than 3,000 people.

According to the latest studies of the European Values Study (EVS), the Muslim community, between 1999 and 2008, saw a big increase, from 0.7% to 2% of the total Luxembourg population.

It is in this context that, since 2015, Islam is legally recognized in the country, thanks to this advance, there are today between 10,000 and 15,000 individuals of Muslim faith living in the "Grand Duchy".

However, all the statistics remain approximate, since the Luxembourg government forbids to collect censuses relating to the beliefs of its inhabitants.
