By the 1960s, the Belgian State signed immigration agreements with Morocco (1964), Turkey (1964), Tunisia (1969) and Algeria (1970), which ended up by increasing the presence of Muslims in the country.
Other factors contributed to the growth of the number of Muslims in Belgium, most notably the Jean Gol (1984) laws, which facilitated the acquisition of Belgian nationality, among other ways by maternal affiliation.

Today Islam is the second most widespread religion in Belgium. According to a study made by the sociologist Jan Hertogen in 2016, the number of Muslims is 781,887, more than 450,000 are Moroccans and 220,000 are Turkish, representing 7% of the Belgian population.

The Muslim community lives mainly in the Brussels Region, it represents 23.6% of the inhabitants of Brussels. Wallonia and Flanders also have a good number of faithful and each has an average of 4.9% of Muslims.

Hertogen's statistics for 2011, 2013 and 2015 showed that the proportion of Muslims has increased from 6.3% to 7% of the total population of Belgium in four years.

According to the hypothesis of the same sociologist, proposed in collaboration with the "Pew Forum of Religion and Public Life", Belgium could count 1.149.000 Muslims in 2030, or 10.2% of the population.
